ArtSystemsKnowledge

A workshop for ideas that need to become systems.

Scaena Lab is the systems workshop of artist Rodrigue Payen—a place where artistic inquiry is carried into tools, structures, and working experiments.

00 / Orientation

The lab begins where the studio leaves off.

In painting, I work with the material rather than against it. I follow its current, see what it reveals, and allow the result to surprise me. Scaena Lab brings that same practice into technology.

Each system starts with a real question. The aim is not to make technology for its own sake, but to give a useful form to an idea—to make knowledge easier to hold, privacy easier to keep, and creative thought easier to extend.

01 / The systems

Works from the lab

Some are ready to use. Others are being shaped in public view.

LiveSystem 001

Password Vault

An invitation-only encrypted vault built around strong, understandable passphrases and private ownership of every login.

What it does

Creates memorable word-based passwords and keeps usernames, websites, categories, and credentials together.

How it works

Your information is encrypted in the browser before it is saved. The master password never leaves your device.

Why it exists

Security should not require surrendering privacy—or filling your memory with meaningless strings.

System 002In development

Scaena Composition

A visual framework for exploring balance, rhythm, tension, and the relationships that give an image its internal structure.

Purpose and direction

Composition is often treated as instinct or a fixed set of rules. This system is being developed to make compositional knowledge explorable without flattening the intuition that gives art life.

System 003In development

Arche Archives

Publishing and knowledge infrastructure for transforming public-domain works into accessible, connected, AI-ready archives.

Purpose and direction

Preservation is only the beginning. Arche Archives is designed to make inherited knowledge easier to verify, navigate, connect, and use—by people and by the intelligent systems that follow us.

02 / Working principles

The values are part of the architecture.

01

Purpose before features

A system begins with the problem it should resolve, not the technology available to build it.

02

Privacy is a design material

Privacy is considered at the beginning, while the structure can still be shaped around it.

03

Knowledge should accumulate

Every useful action should make the larger system clearer, more capable, or easier to understand.

04

Leave room for discovery

Structure gives an idea form. It should never close the door on surprise, intuition, or a better direction.

03 / Lab Notes

Writing from inside the work

Essays, working thoughts, and the ideas beneath the systems.

04 / The artist behind the lab

Scaena Lab is inseparable from the artistic practice of Rodrigue Payen.

Payen’s paintings are led by color, translucence, composition, and an openness to what the process might reveal. He does not begin by forcing the work toward a predetermined answer.

The lab follows the same philosophy. It is an extension of the studio: another place to explore, to organize knowledge, and to discover what an idea can become once it is given a working form.

The ideas are public.
The tools are deliberate.
